Japan Map: Most Common Foreign Nationality In Each Prefecture

Map found on Reddit

Shown above is the map of Japan, with each prefecture depicting its most-represented foreign nationality.

There are more than 2.7 million foreigners who are currently living in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Among them, the Chinese are the most represented foreign nationality in the country, comprising a third of foreign residents in Japan (over 740,000). The Chinese also comprise the majority of foreigners in all but 15 prefectures, and also in the outer islands of Hokkaido and Kyushu.

Brazilians are the most represented foreigners in eight prefectures, while in six prefectures, Koreans are represented the most. Americans, meanwhile, are the most representative foreign nationality in the Okinawa islands, due to their past military presence there.

The presence of a significant foreign population is due to the history between citizens.

In the case of Koreans living in Japan, it is through two important times in history: the two world wars (the period from 1910 to 1945), as well as the 1980s before South Korea experienced a sudden rise in their economy.

In the case of the Brazilians, it started in 1908 when the Japanese moved to Brazil due to the Asian nation’s overpopulation and the need for workers in the South American country. The exodus halted during the Second World War and resumed when the war ended. In 1973, however, it was the Brazilians who came to Japan as the latter nation had an economic boom.
