World War I: Western Front Map (1914-1919)

Video from YouTube/Miran Božičević; Map by Jean Michel Martin from Cartographie 1914 – 1918

The moving map above shows the so-called Western Front during World War I, with every second depicting the daily movements of a country’s army from 1914 to 1919.

The red markings on the map show the Germans and their allies. Blue markings show the French and their colonial infantry, while cyan markings depict the French cavalry. The British army is marked orange, while the color green shows multiple armies: Belgians up north, and Russians, Italians, and Portuguese in the other areas on the map. Lastly, those from the United States military are marked purple.

It is worth noting that the video only shows the front lines of the Western Front, so the regions located southward are left out. Despite that, 85% of the overall map is displayed, and the graphics are zoomed up so that closer details can be seen. The dates and infoboxes are redrawn in a consistent format in all of the video’s frames, resembling the original historical data.

The geographical Western Front is comprised largely of Belgium and France, as well as Luxembourg.
