The maps above show the fictional place of Westeros from the Game of Thrones (GoT) television series, as well as its resemblance to the real-life maps of the United Kingdom and an inverted Ireland combined together.
Despite its apparent resemblance, there are some key differences regarding both Westeros and the British Isles.
The author George R. R. Martin, who wrote the book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” where GoT is based, implied that Westeros is just about the same size as South America in terms of land area. This would mean that Westeros is larger than the British Isles by a long shot, as it would measure more than 17.8 million square kilometers, compared to the British Isles’ 300,000 square km.
What you’ll probably notice on the British map on the right-hand side is the location of the Hadrian’s Wall, which has a length of 117.5 kilometers (73.0 miles) and a height of 5 to 6 meters (16 to 20 feet) in some of its sections. By comparison, a similar icy wall in Westeros is more than 700 feet (213.6 meters) high and 300 miles (482 km) wide, beating its real-life counterpart in both aspects.
However, there is one consolation for the real-life British Isles: its population. At present, around 70 million people inhabit the British Isles including two dozen cities that house over 200,000 people; Westeros only has over a million inhabitants, including 5 cities where hundreds of thousands of people live.
