Europe Map: Countries Without A Metro System

Map created by Maps.Interlude

The map of Europe above shows the continent’s countries that do not currently have a metro system, or more specifically, a “electrified rapid transit train system”.

Wondering which European countries are still waiting for their first metro system? The map above reveals the answer!

In Europe, the list of metro-less countries might surprise you, as these nations rely on other modes of transport.

Throughout continental Europe, the countries without a metro include Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Moldova, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Albania.

If you’re wondering what the countries in those little markers are, these are Luxembourg, Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Malta, and the city-state of Vatican. These places lack a metro system, too.

The island countries of Ireland, Iceland, and Cyprus don’t have metro systems as well.

As it turns out, Slovakia and Ireland stand out as the largest countries without a metro. However, the proposed MetroLink project in the Irish capital city of Dublin could soon change the game.

Whether it’s due to size, population, or geography, these countries are living proof that not every corner of the world needs a metro—but it’s fascinating to see the nations on the list!
