This map of the United States shows how much of the country owns cats and dogs.

Most states have equal ownership of either animal. 16 states have more cats than dogs. Eight states, mostly in the south, have dogs as the dominant pet.

The Insurance Information Institute notes that according to the 2020 National Pet Owners Survey, over 63 million households in the U.S. own dogs. Cats, on the other hand, are in the loving care of more than 42 million American families.
